Developing the NuGamers Handbook for Game Design Education: A Collaborative Journey

March 17, 2025

In our ongoing efforts to support vocational schools and universities offering game design education, we are ready to introduce the NuGamers Handbook. This comprehensive guide addresses the challenges faced by students and professionals in the game industry, with a particular focus on creating a more gender-inclusive environment. The handbook is the result of a collaborative and insightful process, aimed at providing practical solutions and fostering an inclusive learning environment.

The Process

To ensure the handbook accurately reflects the needs and experiences of those in the game industry, we began by conducting interviews and focus groups with entrepreneurs, staff members from vocational schools and universities, and students in game development. These conversations provided valuable insights into the challenges and motivations that drive individuals to pursue careers in game development. The results are embedded in the NuGamers Framework.

Building on this foundation, we organized a co-creation lab in Zagreb. This event brought together professionals, students, and staff members from institutions offering game development courses. Through collaborative workshops and discussions, we were able to gather diverse perspectives and co-create solutions that address the real-world challenges faced by aspiring game developers.

The Content

The handbook is structured to offer solutions to specific challenges, which we have grouped into two main categories:

1. Deciding to Start Studying Game Development

  • Career Risks and Opportunities: Addressing the perception that a career in game development is risky and offers limited opportunities for growth. We provide data on industry growth and opportunities, emphasize transferable skills, and share success stories and pathways to alleviate concerns.
  • Societal Biases: Challenging the notion that game development is not a suitable career for girls. We showcase diverse game content and the wide range of skills involved in game development, from art and storytelling to programming and problem-solving.
  • Self-Doubt and Confidence: Tackling issues of imposter syndrome, particularly among female students. We promote positive affirmations, role models, and supportive peer networks to build self-confidence.

2. Navigating Education and Preparing for a Career in the Game Industry

  • Inclusive Learning Environment: Creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere for all students. We focus on community building, collaborative learning, and inclusive classroom practices to ensure students feel safe and valued.
  • Transforming Culture: Providing tools and strategies to help girls build self-confidence and thrive in the game development field. We emphasize the importance of soft skills such as communication, collaboration, emotional intelligence, and leadership to navigate challenging workplaces.

By addressing these challenges head-on, the NuGamers Handbook aims to empower students and professionals alike, fostering a more inclusive and supportive game development community. We believe that with the right resources and support, anyone can succeed in this dynamic and exciting industry.
